NEW LABYRINTH IN TERWILLIGER PARKWAY COMPLETED
We’re happy to report that Labyrinth Network Northwest (LNN) posted an article featuring the now completed Walpole Garden labyrinth.
If you haven’t checked it out, now’s the time. We have a feeling many folks will be traveling to the site to experience the labyrinth and the spectacular views it offers.
The labyrinth was designed by Anton Vetterlein (architect and FOT president) and constructed by a team of volunteers led by Bob Bonner (FOT Treasurer) and Heike Edossa (PP&R Horticulturist) using Belgian salt & pepper cobblestones to border the crushed rock path. This rectilinear Greek meander-based design was chosen to incorporate the repetitive alternation of the 4 cardinal directions with exceptional views to the South, East and North.
The entire project cost was supported by Friends of Terwilliger and a grant from The Portland Garden Club.
The labyrinth is one of a number of features we are developing in the Walpole Garden which is named to honor Frederick Andrews Walpole, a major US botanical illustrator of late 19th century who built his Portland home in 1894 at Eagle Point, 300 feet to the north of the new Walpole Garden.
