History Lesson: Terwilliger Trestle 1912
A few years ago we came across this picture of a wooden trestle spanning a ravine in Terwilliger Parkway. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to have lasted very long.
On further investigation we found a reference in city archives to the need to replace the trestle with fill. Based on the topography shown here, it appears to be the deep ravine just south of the grassy spot, where a picnic table and parking turnout are located at the start of the Buhler Cutoff Trial. The hillside looks freshly graded so the picture was probably taken in the early days of the Parkway, circa 1912-1914. It looks like they were just finishing up the trestle construction when the photo was taken because there is still lumber and logs laying around it.
If you come across any old photos of Terwilliger Parkway we would love to see them. Send them to info@terwilligerfriends.org
