Nature Patch Coming to Eagle Point: You can Help!
Friends of Terwilliger (FOT) has been working with Portland Parks and Recreation (PP&R) for a few years helping to construct a “nature patch” on the flat of Eagle Point, just off Terwilliger Blvd. at the Hamilton Terrace intersection. Eagle Point is a 1 acre plot that FOT helped alert the city when it was for sale. It was purchased in 2013 and added to Terwilliger Parkway and is now in the public’s hands.
Nature patches are part of PP&R’s Ecologically Sustainable Landscapes Initiative and have been appearing in parks around Portland over the last few years. There are currently about 10 that have already been constructed, and 6 more currently under construction. As PP&R describes them: “Nature patches are spaces within existing parks that are enhanced with beautiful natural elements for people and wildlife. A variety of natural materials like native Pacific Northwest plants, logs, boulders, paths, and
learning elements are added to underused areas to encourage people to play and explore. Nesting boxes, flowering plants, and other additions improve the habitat for birds, pollinating insects, and wildlife.”
Each nature patch is designed for its particular location. Eagle Point is fairly shaded so appropriate plants will be chosen with these conditions in mind. Logs and rocks and walking surfaces have already been installed, and on December 16*** the plants will be planted.
